How Meditation Can Help You Keep A Calm Mind

Everything in the modern age is designed to grab our attention, sapping not only our energy but our calmness in the process. From working later than when we should to dealing with a constant flurry of emails and notifications, it’s not always easy to shut off at the end of the day.

If you find yourself feeling stressed and anxious or unable to sleep, then meditation could provide the answer. As a practice that is believed to date back as far as 5,000 BCE, it is estimated 500 million people around the world meditate.

Here are just some of the reasons how meditation could help you to feel calmer and happier in yourself.

What Is Meditation?

Meditation is an exercise that involves paying close attention to your breathing. It is designed to help bring about a sense of calm so that you are better prepared to face the day ahead. It will leave you in a relaxed mental state, that is free from tension, resentment or any other negative emotion.

You may have noticed that meditation has a spelling not too dissimilar to the word ‘medication’. That’s because instead of curing illnesses within the body, meditation is designed to help with any turbulence that may be happening within your mental state, namely feelings of anxiety and stress that occur due to the trials of everyday life.

Deepak Chopra describes meditation as a “progressive quieting of the mind.” As someone who has meditated every day for the last 40 years, Deepak states he does not remember the last time he felt stressed. He strongly advocates the body’s need for a good night’s sleep, a diet rich in phytonutrients (a rainbow diet) and of course, meditation to remain happy and healthy both physically and mentally.

How To Meditate

It’s possible to meditate at any time of the day, but most people choose to do so in the morning so that it sets them up for the rest of the day.

Find a quiet spot and either sit on the floor with your legs crossed or remain seated in a chair. Set a timer for how long you plan to meditate for – you can do it for as little as 5 minutes up to however long you feel you need to.

Softly close your eyes and begin to breathe slowly and deeply. Your mind should begin to follow the pattern of your breathing. You may begin to drift off into your thoughts, so you’ll need to bring the focus back onto your breath. The goal is to become aware of what’s around you, without your mind thinking about anything specifically.

Continue to breathe in and out until your timer runs out, or that you feel you’ve entered a relaxed state in your subconscious. As you become more advanced with your meditation, you can incorporate a mudra which is also known as a hand pose. Doing so will help you focus your breath and energy even further.
